Frequently Asked Questions

Looking to understand a bit more regarding an appointment, hearing aid technology, and hearing loss in general? Check out our answers to common questions below; we hope these are helpful.

Annual hearing test

Q. How often do I need to come in for a check-up?

A. We prefer to schedule a regular maintenance check every three months where we'll clean your ears, clean your hearing aids, and make sure that the programming on your hearing aids is still working for you. Once a year, we'll perform a full test on your ears again; with modern digital hearing aids, if your hearing changes, we can just reprogram your hearing aids to keep up with those changes. It's not like glasses where if your prescription changes you have to get a whole new pair.

Q. Do you take my insurance?

A. We check all insurance for benefits. We take credit cards and check cards. We also accept CareCredit, which offers no-interest 12-month financing. We are hoping to accept PayPal soon.

Q. What's a mobile office home visit like?

A. Our mobile office operates the same way as our Sarasota and Port Charlotte offices. The only difference is that we come to you!

Q. Should I bring someone with me to my appointment?

A. Yes! We love when a friend or family comes with you to help us do things right.

Hearing questions Q: What causes hearing loss?
A: Most of the time, when we test someone for hearing loss, we find that it's caused by nerve damage. Over time the nerves have started to weaken or curl, and the only way to fight that is through amplification. There are other types of loss, such as conductive loss in the middle ear, but we don't often come across that. We specialize in treating nerve deafness and nerve damage, which responds well to the right hearing aids.
Q: Are there different solutions for different kinds of hearing loss?
A: Yes, as there are various types of hearing loss, there are also varying solutions, depending on the type and degree of hearing loss. While most types of hearing loss can be corrected with hearing aids, sometimes additional medical intervention is necessary.
Q: How do I know if I need a hearing aid?
A: Some of the first signs of hearing loss are when things start to sound muddy or cloudy – especially when you’re in a crowd. If you find you're having a hard time answering questions, you can't hear people at a distance, you turn the TV up higher than you used to — these may all be signs of hearing loss. Maybe it seems like everyone's talking too fast or has started mumbling. Maybe you have to ask your spouse to repeat what people say, or you nod and smile because you aren't comfortable asking someone to speak louder. This can lead to withdrawing from activities and disconnecting from friends. But if you are suffering from hearing loss, don't lose hope; hearing aids may be able to give you your old life back.
Q: How can I support my loved one who has started wearing hearing aids?
A: Getting used to hearing aids is a team effort! Remember that someone wearing hearing aids will not have perfect hearing, so do your best to make things easier on them. Make eye contact and make sure they can see your lips when you're speaking, and say their name to get their attention so they know to focus on you. (For example, it may be hard for them to hear every word you say if you've got your head buried in a book or you're looking through the refrigerator!)
